Dental Veneers and Crowns

Dental veneers and crowns are highly aesthetic dental restorations that are constructed in a laboratory and then fitted in the dental surgery.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is used to restore a tooth to its full shape and size. If the size of the cavity / broken part of the tooth is too great, it may be necessary to provide a crown / partial crown. Most crowns in the past have contained gold or non-precious metals but we can now provide crowns that are made purely of porcelain.  This gives the crown a life like appearance as light transmits through the porcelain.

In many cases just the broken part of the tooth can be replaced with porcelain, which results in little additional damage to the remaining solid tooth. These porcelain ‘inlays’ are bonded to the tooth in the same way that white fillings are.

Teeth do not like being damaged more than is necessary, so these provide an excellent way of restoring the tooth to its normal function.

Dental Veneers

A dental veneer is a thin piece of porcelain that fits the front surface of a tooth, like a fingernail. They are very thin, about 0.5mm, and can be used to change the appearance of a tooth. This can be for one or more teeth or all of the front teeth. They are very aesthetic and natural and are bonded to the surface of the tooth.  Dental veneers are especially good for front teeth with fillings in order to create an illusion of a perfect tooth.

Smile Improvements

Smile improvements will usually involve a combination of whitening, white fillings, dental veneers and crowns. This will depend on what you require and how this can be achieved. I will always use the most tooth kind treatment that is possible to achieve the result. Some treatments can cause severe damage to the teeth and I would always avoid this type of treatment. The best solution for what you wish to achieve will be discussed fully with you, often in combination with models and photos of your teeth.

Making a dental crown / dental veneers

To make a crown / dental veneer the tooth is first shaped and precise edges are created by the dentist.  A highly accurate impression is taken of the tooth.  The missing part of the tooth is replaced with a temporary plastic material while the crown is being made.

The crown is made by a dental laboratory.  Being in the computer age, this will involve CAD/CAM technology.  The crown is then checked on the tooth and, once all is correct, is bonded on to the tooth with an adhesive resin.

These can be so beautiful that you will hardly be able to tell that it is not a normal tooth.
